Professor Karl-Heinz Pohl arrives to Warsaw to present at our Asian Debate his opinions on the Chinese political and ideological system. On the one hand, there are strong Confucian traditions, treated as “national”. On the other hand, the Chinese Communist movement was under influence of Marxism (in a Bolshevik version), and the People’s Republic of China, as Stalin’s ally, had to copy the Soviet patterns. The Western concepts of democracy attracted Chinese attention from the very beginning of the 20th century.
There are various opinions on these processes and his politics, but undoubtedly China changes. Professor Pohl will present his opinions on these changes.
Professor Karl-Heinz Pohl, a special guest of the Library, as a sinologist studies classical Chinese literature, arts, ethics and history of ideas, and promotes dialogue among civilizations – the principle adopted by the UN in 1998. Now professor-emeritus, up to 2010 headed sinology at the Trier University. He published many books and studies in German and English.
